Many parents become unsure about how to be an effective parent and a good role model. There are several issues children face as they get older and see more peer pressure. It’s key for parents to be good role models in their child’s life and help children control their peer pressure. Here are a few tips to helping you become a good role model for your child.
1. ESTABLISH GOOD COMMUNICATION
Opening good communication is a big key to good parenting. A willingness to engage and be active in your child’s life is important. Make sure that each day you ask your child how things are going. Try not to nag about things, it will make them less likely to want to share things with you. Deal with questions fairly and honestly, keeping it age appropriate. Be prepared to offer advice and discuss solutions to help your child solve problems.
2. TEACH BY EXAMPLE
Actions always speak louder than words! Your children are always watching you. Be aware of how you act in public places and treat other people. Showing your child how a happy and successful adult lives is an effective way of teaching your child.
3. BE INVOLVED IN YOUR CHILD’S LIFE
Take a pro-active stance when it comes to your child. Be active and take interest in things they are interested in, whether it be sports, band, art etc.. Children from households of parents that are actively involved in their child’s life have been less likely to be involved in drugs, drinking, and gangs.
4. ENCOURAGE GOOD BEHAVIOR
Make sure you let your child know how proud you are of them! Praise and acknowledgement is key to the self-esteem and development of any child and will give them an incentive to keep doing good things! Teach them to be accountable for a chore at home and then reward accordingly.
5. MENTOR YOUR CHILD
Teach your child how taking responsibility can pay. Spend lots of quality time with them. Have dinner at night together and talk about things they are interested in. Let them have a paper route or babysit. Take them out into the community to do good deads together.
